The Jazz Vocalists of Minnesota recently sponsored a jazz vocal workshop with renowned vocalist Stephanie Nakasian. A swinging singer and protégé of the great Jon Hendricks in the 1980s, Ms. Nakasian has performed for many years alongside husband/pianist Hod O’Brien, as well as with Milt Hinton, Clark Terry, Bobby McFerrin, Hank Jones, Annie Ross and more. She’s a perennial favorite at the Artists Quarter in St. Paul, where she recently performed May 21-22. The May 23rd workshop was a very special opportunity for our members and guests to learn about and practice the essentials of vocal jazz from one of the genre’s top performers as well as seasoned educator.
The Jazz Vocalists of Minnesota offered a public workshop last October 2009 for singers, aspiring singers, and those interested in learning more about the art and craft of jazz singing. The workshop, titled “Singers and Players: Making the Band Your Friend” focused on communicating with the band. Vocalist/educator Vicky Mountain, with help from vocalists Lucia Newell and Connie Dussl and from pianist Chris Lomheim and guitarist James Allen, guided the participants in communicating intros and outtros, counting off the tune, and communicating with the band during the song. The workshop was a great success.
Last February 2009, the JzVMn presented a Vocal Woodshedding/ Jam Session at the Schmitt Music auditorium at the Galleria in Edina. Vicky Mountain led the woodshedding, but several members along with Phil Aaron on the keys shared very helpful and constructive feedback with the singers. Everyone got to run through a song and get critiqued on topics of their choice. It was definitely an educational experience for everyone! Check out some pictures below.
